Beyond 2018 Japan-Sweden International Collaboration Symposium
Preschool education with sustainability perspectives

Principal in primary school of Linköping municipality, author, master in outdoor education

Title: Teaching technology outdoors – when, why and how – we do lessons outdoors in Sweden.

Abstract: Research shows that outdoor education with regular physical activities and contact with nature can have positive and meaningful effects, both directly and indirectly, on learning, academic performance, health and wellbeing. I have been working with learning outdoors as teacher, trainer - both for different municipalities in Sweden and by my own company and as a principal for over thirty years and I have only positive experiences with me. The children learn with the whole body and understand better when we use our senses and experience - in the play, in both the spontaneous and planned teaching at the preschool/primary school.

The preschool curriculum thus gives support to integration of outdoor activities into daily pedagogical activities, so that outdoor activities, according to the preschool’s mission, may constitute a component in play and learning. Collaboration, discovering and experiencing together become more apparent when we leave the room indoors.

I will give examples of activities for a learning that is relevant and sustainable on my workshop.

Research proves that children’s health, motivation and creativity are positively influenced by daily and regular stay in green natural and cultural landscapes. This fact should, in the context of preschool and school, be regarded as an essential component in children’s learning, their personal and social development and their health.

Title: Helsingborg Environmental Studio Initiatives

Abstract: At the department of sustainable urban planning in Helsingborg we create a new meeting place - Habiteum. The ideas about Habiteum are based on 30 years of experience in communication with schools and the general public about sustainable development.

The umbrella for our activities is found in the UN's 17 global goals and the city's quality of life program. We use outdoor education as a tool to clarify and specify. Three things are in focus: Nature contact, Workshop and Competence for action

Competence for action emphasizes that what we communicate will have an impact. We want to promote change in people both in their roles as individuals but also as professionals.

Nature contact is the starting point in our way of working. Without nature we are nothing. In everything we do, we want there to be contact with nature. Therefore, the whole human being, preferably with all their senses, is activated in our themes and programs.

In the workshops we meet in creativity as we cook, prepare and utilize together. The workshop reflects our will and confidence in people's development. When we meet people in creative processes, we believe in increased commitment. An example of creative meetings is our food workshops.

Abstract: ”Sustainable future through ingenuity and action”「

Sustainable development, health and well-being and the convention on the Right of the Child are new concept in the Swedish Curriculum that began to apply in July 2019. According to Ingrid Engdahl, associate professor of children's and youth sciences at Stockholm University, this is two sides of the same coin.

In the curriculum for preschool and school, education and teaching characterized by democracy, connections and context are important guiding principles in the Sustainable Future project that the Reggio Emilia Institute in Sweden started in 2016. A national and regional network that has involved many educators around Sweden and influenced their work in preschools.

Through the Sustainable Future project, the Reggio Emilia Institute wants to support preschools and schools to become places with hope, ingenuity and the ability to act in sustainability issues, where children's and young people's hypotheses, research and action given a great place.

The way of working is characterized by listening, exploration and slowness, and driven by will, courage and desire, to support people's responsibility and their ability to gain and spread faith in the future.

The schools of Helsingborg have in various ways worked with sustainable development and I will give you some example from our preschools and the project "Matsmart."
