NORIO MATSUMOTO
Chancellor of Miyagi Gaguin
Spring has arrived in the earthquake stricken area.
The cherry blossoms have come out at Miyako, Ishinomaki and they give comfort to survivors of the disaster.
24th April was Easter. Jesus Christ suffered on the cross, died, then was resurrected. We believe the suffering in our own lives will be relieved through Jesus.
Miyagi Gakuin keeps making efforts to ensure the safety of students after the disaster. Some students died and some lost family members or their homes. We pray they will be comforted and hope they can make their way positively.
The damage to Miyagi Gakuin is being repaired day by day. The chapel with its pipe organ, the kindergarten, junior high, high school and university campus are mostly restored.
Miyagi Gakuin is starting the mission of education with the new school year. The kindergarten already started on 15th April, after the building was confirmed safe. The next day the entrance ceremony was held for the incoming kindergarteners. At the junior and senior high school, new student orientation was held on the 25th. The entrance ceremony was 28th April. In the university, teachers have been working since shortly after the earthquake. Students have been permitted on campus since 18th April. New student orientation will be 6thMay and classes will start on the following Monday. Regular chapel services will resume as usual. Of course we are concerned about students’ safety during aftershocks.
We really appreciate the Miyagi Gakuin community as well as the many others who are giving us their prayers and other support.
We will continue to comfort and encourage those affected by the disaster.
We believe God will continue to bless Miyagi Gakuin and all of you.
The March 11, 2011 earthquake seriously damaged Miyagi Gakuin and some of our students were killed in the tsunami following the quake, while some students who survived sadly lost parents and other relatives. As a result, a great number of our students are struggling to recover from the tremendous personal and financial losses that have occurred in this tragic disaster.
With a firm belief in Jesus Christ, we tell our students that we will support them both spiritually and financially in spite of our own financial difficulties that have resulted from the substantial damages to Miyagi Gakuin’s school facilities.
Miyagi Gakuin has been providing a Christian education to high school girls ever since it was founded 125 years ago in the name of Jesus Christ. In addition, Miyagi Gakuin has offered university as well as kindergarten education over the past 60 years. We currently have an enrollment of over 4000 students including university, high school and junior high school students, and kindergarten children for whom we feel a deep sense of responsibility to help them grow and reach their goals.
In order that we may fully support our students in their time of greatest need, we are humbling asking for donations from the community to help us help our students. Please send donation checks to Miyagi Gakuin, 9 Sakuragaoka, Sendai 981-8557, Japan. Unfortunately, we do not yet have a system in place to accept donations via credit card at this time.
E-mail messages can be sent to Dr. Matsumoto, Chancellor at n-matsumoto@mgu.ac.jp.
